Polymorphic phase boundary in piezoelectric oxides

    Get PDF
The design of phase boundaries has now become a consolidated strategy to improve the functional properties of piezoelectric oxides because of the unique properties that may be obtained in their vicinity. In particular, polymorphic phase boundaries (PPBs) have attracted significant interest in recent years because they represent a significant breakthrough in terms of enhanced piezoelectric activity of lead-free piezoelectric oxides. PPBs are temperature-driven phase transitions where both intrinsic and extrinsic contributions maximize, thereby enhancing the macroscopic properties of piezoelectric materials. This tutorial discusses potassium–sodium–niobate-based systems as model materials to reveal some of the most relevant advances in the design of PPBs through compositional modifications. We focus on how PPBs can be modulated by engineered doping and also discuss the direct relation between PPBs and the enhancement of piezoelectric activity. Finally, we briefly describe the main experimental techniques for detecting PPBs.Postprint (author's final draft

Fuzzy Predictive Controller for Mobile Robot Path Tracking

    Get PDF
IFAC Intelligent Components and Instruments for Control Applications, Annecy, France 1997This paper presents a way of implementing a Model Based Predictive Controller (MBPC) for mobile robot path-tracking. The method uses a non-linear model of mobile robot dynamics and thus allows an accurate prediction of the future trajectories. Constraints on the maximum attainable angular velocity is also considered by the algorithm. A fuzzy approach is used to implement the MBPC. The fuzzy controller has been trained using a lookup-table scheme, where the database of fuzzy-rules has been obtained automatically from a set of input-output training patterns, computed with the predictive controller. Experimental results obtained when applying the fuzzy controller to a TRC labmate mobile platform are given in the paper.

This research deals with the different uses that had the old Trinitarian convent of San Onofre. They reuse as infantry barracks from 1852 until well into the twentieth century as headquarters of the Guardia Civil has resulted in multiple transformations. Through its interventions can make a reading of the property, as well as the materials used and the solutions given to the problems of adaptation to improper use. The study methodology is based on document analysis preserved in the Military Historical Archive of Segovia. The aim is to publicize the intervention processes and adaptation of a religious space in military and later in culture, although the latter unfinishedUniversidad de Málaga. Experimental characterization of gear-rattle in a quick-return mechanism

    Get PDF
Gear rattle in a quick-return mechanism is studied. Rattling is characterized by experimental work in a mechanical system with two gears driven by an electric motor. The acceleration of the mechanical vibrations and the variations in the electrical current of the motor were measured by means of sensors connected to a data acquisition system. The results obtained are presented in time-domain plots, and analyzed in the frequency domain by power spectra. It is shown that rattling is well identified in the time-domain plots for both parameters, while it is only evident in the motor electrical current signal in the frequency-domain analyses

Adaptive control of a solar furnace for material testing

IFAC Adaptive Systems in Control and Signal Processing. Glasgow. Scotland. UK. 26/08/1998This paper presents an adaptive control system for controlling the temperature of a solar furnace, which is a high solar concentrating facility made up of heliostats tracking the sun and reflecting solar radiation onto a static parabolic concentrating system at the focal spot of which a high percentage of the solar energy collected by the collector system is concentrated in a small area. A large attenuator (shutter) placed between the collector system and the concentrator serves to control the amount of solar energy used for heating the samples placed at the focal spot. The paper shows the results obtained in the application of adaptive PI controllers to a solar furnace, incorporating feedforward action, anti-windup and slew rate constraint handling mechanisms

A wavelet approach to detect gear-rattle development in mechanical systems

    Get PDF
In this work two methods for gear-rattling detection in mechanical systems are studied. For this purpose, an experimental quick-return mechanism was constructed with gears driven by an electric motor. Rattling is detected from the mechanical vibrations acceleration and the electric motor current. Vibrations signal is measured by a biaxial accelerometer and electrical current is obtained from the motor electronic driver. Signals are processed in time-domain and time-frequency domain. Rattling level is measured through a proposed performance evaluation index that is obtained from the application of band-pass filters and the RMS value of the signal for the time-domain processing. For the time-frequency analysis, the wavelet transform is used to isolate the rattling and the signal is post-processed to compute the RMS value. It is shown that the use of the electric motor current for the detection of rattling produce better results than the mechanical vibrations acceleration. With respect to the time-domain method versus the time-frequency method, it was found that the application of the wavelet transform significantly improves the indexes that are used for gear-rattle detection
